ENTERING AGED CARE

The following is general information only and should not be relied upon for any other purposes.

Entry to residential aged care can be permanent or for respite (short-term) care.

In either case, the potential care recipient must be assessed as suitable for admission to residential aged care by an Aged Care Assessment Team.

Potential care recipients should contact their General Practitioner for referral to an Aged Care Assessment Team. These teams generally operate from the major teaching hospitals.

Potential care recipients are assessed for:

'high level' permanent and/or respite care or

'low level'permanent and/or respite care.

Fees and charges for permanent care depend in part on the potential care recipients 'high' or 'low' care assessment and their assests as assessed by Centrelink.
